Our Lady of Mount Carmel Parish Marks 125 Years Amid Global Catholic Jubilee

ree

In 2025, Catholics around the globe and in the diocese of Pueblo have been uniting for the Jubilee Year, celebrated under the theme "Pilgrims of Hope." This Holy Year invites believers, seekers, and all those drawn to renewal and reconciliation to embark on a spiritual journey, aiming to cultivate peace in a world often divided by conflict.

A Jubilee Year, or Holy Year, in the Catholic tradition is marked by spiritual renewal, forgiveness of sins, and a focus on reconciliation with God and one another. Traditionally observed every 25 years, Holy Years offer opportunities for believers to receive God’s mercy through sacramental confession, indulgence activities, pilgrimages, and acts of charity and mercy toward others. The concept of the Jubilee traces its roots to biblical tradition, when debts were forgiven, properties restored to families, and those enslaved were set free—a powerful symbol of justice and grace.

While ordinary Jubilees are celebrated at 25-year intervals, including the most recent in 1950, 1975, and 2000, popes may also proclaim extraordinary Jubilees in response to special needs or significant events, such as the Jubilee of Mercy in 2016.

Locally, Our Lady of Mount Carmel Parish in the Grove is commemorating both the worldwide Jubilee and a major parish milestone—its 125th anniversary of serving marginalized communities, beginning with Italian immigrants and Spanish speakers in 1901. The parish will conclude this anniversary year on the second weekend of July at its annual Parish Festival.

The Jubilee celebrations of this Holy Year at Mount Carmel began on March 5 with a First Saturday Latin Mass. The parish’s tradition of First Saturday Masses continues every month, held at 8:00 a.m. for the specific community wishing to celebrate in the ancient language of the Church. The liturgy follows the Ordinary Form, using the 3rd Typical Edition of the Roman Missal.

Upcoming events include a Mass for the Spanish-speaking community on September 24 at 7:00 p.m., followed by coffee and pan dulces. Organizers hope to welcome more than 100 participants to this special Jubilee Mass.

Finally, the English-speaking community will gather for their Jubilee celebration on Friday, November 7 at 7:00 p.m., with a coffee and cookie reception to follow.

As the Jubilee Year unfolds, Our Lady of Mount Carmel Parish invites all members and neighbors to join in these celebrations, fostering hope, unity, and spiritual renewal for the year ahead.
